Zimele Artisans

Zimele Artisans in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa, make jewellery, accessories and decorations from felt and colourful material.

Fair Grounds has been working with the Zimele Artisans since 2014 when we were put in touch through a mutual fair trade contact. We loved the products and wanted to assist the group in selling to the UK.

Zimele is a Zulu word meaning 'people stand on their own feet' and since 2007 the enterprise project has worked with skilled women living in remote, impoverished areas of KwaZulu-Natal.

The vision is to confront the root causes of poverty and remove the barriers to economic self-sufficiency for women in South Africa’s rural communities.

The aim is to empower women with the skills, resources, and support networks to start businesses and social service projects to sustain themselves, their families and their communities.

Using established techniques and a combination of traditional and new designs the women create pieces that will brighten and bring joy to your homes and yourselves.

The distinctive feature in a lot of their work is the vibrant patterned shwe shwe material, combined with felt and beadwork, as well as skilful beaded and felted jewellery. The women work together to produce these beautiful items.

Income generated from their sales are improving the lives of the women, their families and communities.
